Biography:
| Dr. Shahumyan has over 12 years¿ experience specialising
in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geo-spatial analysis and modelling, data
analysis and data management with a focus on land use, urban modelling, spatial
planning, healthcare, environment, and spatial decision supporting systems. He has
a Master degree in Applied Mathematics and a PhD in Engineering. From 2001 to
2004 Dr Shahumyan did his first post-doctoral research on statistical modelling
at the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems of National Academy of
Sciences of Armenia. Meanwhile, he expanded his career as a Visiting Researcher
at the University of Cambridge visiting the Centre of Applied Medical
Statistics three times between 2002 and 2005. Aiming to get more practical experience in policy analysis
and working with stakeholders in 2004 Dr Shahumyan moved to consultancy work in
international projects supporting government institutions in Armenia. Here he made
acknowledged contributions to the development of emerging GIS technologies in
Armenia, particularly in state organisations such as the Hydro-Meteorological
Service, Environmental Impact Monitoring Centre and Ministry of Health of Armenia.
In 2008 Dr Shahumyan joined University College Dublin
(UCD) as a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Urban Environment Project His
research at UCD involves land use modelling, scenario generation and analysis
for future regional development, spatial and statistical analyses informing
decision makers. A successful example of generating innovative modelling
solutions to real world problems was achieved in a recent application of the
MOLAND model, which formed an important part of the latest review of the Regional Planning Guidelines published by Dublin & Mid East Regional Authorities in 2010. In 2010, Dr Shahumyan further expanded his experience as a
participant of the Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme
research programme ¿Land Use Modelling and Analysis Network¿ (LUMAN). Within
the scope of this program, he visited New Zealand Landcare Research, where he became
familiar with the New Zealand experience on integrated land use modelling and ways
of effectively collaborating with stakeholders. Since March of 2012, Dr Shahumyan has been appointed as a
Senior Technical Officer at UCD School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy. Here he has organised GeoSAL GIS Seminar Series and GIS Consulting Support and Free Clinic for UCD researchers. Though his new tasks, Dr Shahumyan still continues his
research in a multi-disciplinary team of researchers on application of
geo-spatial modelling to support decision makers and urban planners in Ireland. Dr Shahumyan has presented his research results at 15 international conferences, in more than 20 research papers and in 2 book chapters. Since May 2010, he is a reviewer for the European Science Foundation. |
Research Interests
| Dr. Shahumyan's main research is focused on scenario generation and analysis for future regional development, dynamic spatial simulation of land cover changes and urban growth, land use and transport modelling, geo-spatial and statistical analyses informing decision makers, etc. A successful example of generating innovative modelling solution to real world problem was recent application of the MOLAND model in forming an important part of the latest review of the Regional Planning Guidelines published by Dublin & Mid East Regional Authorities in 2010. His research interest include:
Dr Shahumyan also manages and administers the URBIS spatial data warehouse of the University, Geo-Spatial Analysis Lab (GeoSAL) of the School and provides GIS consultancy for UCD researchers.
