Biography:

Jonathan completed a Joint BSc in Geography and Surveying at Newcastle University in 1992 and an MSc in Rural Resource and Environmental Policy at Wye College, University College London in 1997. After a period of travel and work overseas Jonathan started a PhD on the geomorphological and geochemical impacts of the 1998 Aznalcóllar tailings dam failure (SW Spain), at the University of Aberystwyth in 1999. He was awarded his PhD in 2004.

Jonathan was appointed lecturer at UCD in September 2004 and currently teaches courses on Earth Systems (Stage 1), Quaternary Environmental Change and River Catchment Management (Stage 2) and Research Design and Reading the Landscape (MA). Jonathan has one research masters students and provides co-supervision for two PhD projects.

Jonathan's research interests lie in the fields of river science, geomorphology and environmental change. He is co-PI on the SILTFLUX project investigating suspended solid transport patterns and dynamics in Irish rivers, funded by the EPA STRIVE Programme. He is also conducting on-going research on: Lateglacial and Holocene landscape development in Ireland, exploring the interplay between glacial inheritance, human occupation histories and Holocene environmental change; metal-mining impacts in fluvial systems using an integrated geomorphological-geochemical approach; reconstruction of flood event histories using high-resolution core scanning; and geochemical mapping of the Anthropocene in European river catchments.

Jonathan is Director of the Itrax Core Scanner facility, which is housed in the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy at UCD.
