Biography:
| I am a Lecturer in Geography, Director of the BA Geography Programme and Senior Fellow in Teaching and Academic Development at University College Dublin. My research interests are in the processes and outcomes of urban transformations in Western cities, and in particular in former waterfront districts. I have a particular interest in the role of the public sector in urban regeneration and have published nationally and internationally. I am currently (2008-2012) Chair of the Young Scholars Committee of the International Geographical Union Urban Commission (www.igu-urban.com). I teach Human Geography, Geographical Research Skills, Urban Policy and Research Design at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. From 2007-2009, I led an inter-disciplinary team of University Fellows assessing the expectations and experiences of first year students and undertook a project examining innovative ways of engaging first year geography students. I am currently collaborating with colleagues from St Patricks College Drumcondra and NUI Maynooth on enhancing the research experience for geography undergraduates. |
Research Interests
| My research sits at the interface of urban, social and political geography with a specific focus on urban regeneration policy, processes and impacts. From my PhD research on comparative waterfront redevelopment in Dublin and Cardiff, my work has evolved to focus on specific aspects of the regeneration process and in particular the role of macro-processes in shaping particular urban spaces. As a geographer, "place" matters and I have developed a forensic approach to understanding the complex processes shaping the city of Dublin, a rapidly transforming European city and thus an ideal laboratory for such research. International partnerships currently being developed focus on developing these understandings within a European policy framework. Research output to date has focused significantly on the socio-spatial dimensions of regeneration in response to broader macro- economic shifts; recent and future work will focus in particular on understanding the important influences - formal and informal - on shaping the culture of regeneration. This should provide significant scope for seeking collaborative research funding, building on previous European grants from the EU 6th Framework and ESPON-ERDF (2007-2013) programmes. The question of how regeneration policy evolves and with what impacts has been central to the work of my research students, my own writing and my teaching. Dublin Docklands Reinvented (my monograph) is the most comprehensive account of historic and contemporary changes in the city and has had substantial impact in academic and community circles. Setting the agenda for Irish urban policy development has been Renewing Urban Communities (Ashgate, 2005) co-edited with Dr Mark Scott. Expertise developed within this field led to a number of funded research projects, and invitations to address and opportunities to influence policy and other groups. My work on brownfield regeneration played a key role in shaping thinking on development in Dublin and led to the commissioning of an inventory of brownfield land in the city. An MLitt student undertook this survey under my supervision, and elements of the database have formed the basis of a number of MA dissertations. Developing an understanding of the important of place to such thematic questions is important and currently I supervise a CSC Scholarship PhD student applying these questions in a Chinese context. This is opening up a range of new research ideas on the applicability of Western paradigms to non-Western contexts and provides excellent material for the module I co-teach, World Urbanisation. A second, and related, strand of research investigates the culture of regeneration focusing on what political culture underpins regeneration as well as how, and by whom, urban identity is defined in a neoliberal context? I am primary supervisor of one PhD thesis in this area and DSP member for a Cultural Policy student. The contribution of my co-edited volume Heritage, Memory and the Politics of Identity (Ashgate, 2007), and a number of book chapters on this theme, to international debates has been recognized through invitations to present my work internationally, for example to English Heritage (2008) and the Dutch Council of Tall Buildings / Ministry of the Environment. Recent conference papers presented to the International Geographical Union focus on the role of political culture, in urban regeneration. Over the next 12 months in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Palermo (Sicily), a particular focus will be how the economic crisis is shaping approaches to and opportunities for continued regeneration. Because of the rapidly changing nature of cities, they provide a "real-world laboratory" within which to investigate geographical concepts and processes, of national and international relevance, with students. Engaging large groups of students with these themes and ideas has been a major challenge but through creativity, it has been possible to integrate my research agenda successfully with my teaching activity in a number of ways. My published and ongoing output provides a resource for students in all my modules; the engagement of undergraduate students in active research and fieldwork has fostered a sense of inquiry that has attracted them to undertake graduate research and co-author with me; and my attempts to develop innovative approaches to communicate the excitement of the urban environment as a research space has resulted in a very significant body of work on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. |

| Through my role as Chair of the IGU Urban Commission Young Scholars Committee, I have recently co-edited a book with Dr Maria Jose Pineira Mantinan, University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Following from this, I recently received ESPON funding for participation in a research project led by the Univesity of Santiago de Compostela with partners in Greece, Poland, Romania and France. Nationally, I am collaborating with Dr Ruth McManus and Dr Susan Hegarty (St Patricks College Drumcondra) and Dr Shelagh Waddington and Dr Kay MacKeogh (NUIM) on an AISHE funded project on Enhancing Research in the Undergraduate Curriculum. I have had extensive involvement with Dublin City Council on a number of projects. |
Teaching Philosophy
| My primary teaching and learning goal is to lead students on a progressively more independent research journey over their life-cycle. Harnessing the energy of engaged students to encourage peer learning is critical and this is best achieved through conversational, reflective and experiential learning focused on developing and applying understanding. |

Enhancement of Teaching
| Harnessing the potential of new technologies to promote engagement has been at the heart of my teaching since my first Presidents Teaching Grant (2004) to develop digital video skills with 2nd year students. In 2006, my focus moved to examining blended learning as an enhancement tool in large groups driven by personal reflection on the Level 1 Human Geography module (enrolment 400). This had revealed a disjuncture between the desired learning outcomes (integrative) and module structure (segmented). With support from the University Large Class Teaching Project, the module was re-designed to adopt a blended approach with Moodle as the linchpin for every activity. Structured through enquiry, the focus shifted from my "teaching" activities to student-led lecture, tutorial and online work. Structured groupwork facilitated conversational learning while independent research facilitated integrative learning by applying geographical concepts to familiar contexts. The experience, independently evaluated and validated, demonstrated the effectiveness of technology as an engagement tool, and became a "good-practice" model for enhancing first year teaching and learning within the University (see O'Neill & Galvin, 2011) and internationally. This experience led to a reconsideration of other modules, including my Level 3 specialist module, but in particular has re-shaped the School approach to Level 2. Through blended learning incorporating a significant lab component, I have designed and lead delivery of a research-based and research-oriented core for 280 students. This returns skills acquisition to the curriculum and was recently described by our external examiner as "an excellent model for a research preparation course". |
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
| Arising from the University Module Enhancement Project (in which I had a leadership role), I led undergraduate Geography through a curriculum review in 2010. Issues of concern including progression and coherency have been addressed through the development of programme pathways to better align module content, skills and student interests. While this is critical within the programme, it is also crucial that learning outcomes, assessment and content are aligned within modules to maximize learning. In my modules, desired learning outcomes have a dual focus at all levels: to develop subject-specific knowledge and understanding but also to develop transferable teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. I use assessment to shape learning behaviour as much as test competency. For example, at Level 1 students complete a short 5% assignment to prepare for their tutorial (attendance and participation worth 5%); ideas are then discussed and refined and later formally assessed through a larger written task (15%). Short assignments vary from individual to group activities and shape engagement as typified by this student feedback: "knowing you are graded and monitored on what you research is a great incentive to actually do the reading". Formative assessment is also built into my modules to aid self-reflection by students on their progress. For example in GEOG30380, a series of in-class exercises, on which students receive very quick written comment either from me or their peers, have been embedded where previous student feedback has highlighted difficulty. In this module, I have also used the same assessment piece to test generic and subject-specific proficiencies. For example, students must produce a group poster on a city of their choice: they undertake research to select a case study, apply a geographical model to it, develop team-working and communication skills during their group interactions; and develop technical skills in producing a research poster. |
Developing as a Teacher
| Academic development is an ongoing process articulated through a combination of personal learning and professional practice. In 2003-04, I completed the 4 modules of the CTL Induction Programme and regularly benefit from internal developmental opportunities, most recently the Concept Maps for Assessment Workshop. Nationally I have twice participated at the NAIRTL Annual Conference. Internationally, my work has been presented at teaching and learning events including the Universitas 21 Conference (Glasgow, 2008) as well as the International Network for Learning and Teaching in Geography (INLT) Workshop in Washington DC (2010), events from which I also drew new ideas that have informed and help interrogate my practice. Review work for the Journal of Geography in Higher Education as well as Higher Education, and membership of the SRHE has provided access to cutting-edge research, for example on the challenges of higher education massification, that has shaped my approach to large-group and other forms of teaching. Informally, I have mentored School staff on teaching and learning, and play the key role in tutor training within the School. More formally, I have been part of the team supporting the DRHEA Fellows in their work on first year and co-led their recent 2-day training session. |
Innovation & Leadership
| Innovation is the hallmark of a reflective and responsive practitioner, as our changing context requires new thinking to enhance learning. To create relevant and engaging learning environments, I have actively embraced the potential of new technologies for learning and assessment. Underpinned by collegiality, it has been important to share these experiences and encourage others to innovate. This is exemplified through my work as University Fellow, as joint leader of GEOGSIG (Ireland) and as joint network coordinator of the INLT. |
