Biography:
Walter Foley is carrying out postdoctoral research in the area of socio-economics and planning. This project is titled Dublin's Role in the National and Global Economy. A core purpose of the research is to ascertain the extent to which the Dublin city region is the economic driver of the national economy. Prior to this project Dr. Foley worked in both Dublin City Council and the Dublin Regional Authority (DRA). In Dublin City Council he was responsible for benchmarking the city region¿s performance in a global context across a range of socio-economic and environmental metrics. He was also involved in developing an ¿open cities action plan¿ and agenda for the city region and in other city planning projects. In his role as Senior Research and Policy Development Officer with the DRA between 2007 and 2010 he developed the monitoring and implementation framework for the current Regional Planning Guidelines (RPGs) and contributed to the development of the regional settlement strategy. He also project managed the Strategic Environmental Assessment and Habitats Directive Appropriate Assessment of those RPGs. This included working with the Urban Institute (UII) in UCD incorporating outputs from MOLAND land use model into the SEA and land use scenario analysis of the RPGs settlement strategy. He was also responsible for broader regional policy development, liaising with key State Agencies and Government Departments. Dr. Foley completed his PhD on the Appraisal of the Sustainability of Irish Settlements Using Metabolism Modelling in 2006. He has an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science.
