I undertook a PhD degree at the UCD School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy in the fields of Spatial Planning and Rural Geography (2004-2008). During my studies, my professional development was enhanced through developing skills in quantitative and qualitative research methods, attending specialised seminars, gaining consultancy experience and becoming a better communicator by presenting my work in numerous international research conferences and workshops. |

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to study Geography, receiving strong encouragement at home to go out and experience the world beyond the hall door which is waiting for you to see it”. My studies within the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy in UCD have made this happen. As soon as I sat in my first Geography lecture in Theatre Q I knew I had made the right choice both in what discipline to study but also in deciding to spend the next few years in UCD, little did I know I would still be here now! |

After finishing a BA in European Studies in Trinity and working abroad for a year, I decided to apply for the Masters in Regional and Urban Planning (MRUP) in the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy. I chose this course because I’d always been interesting in planning, particularly its historical aspects and its impact on shaping the places around us. Also, as a professional qualification I hoped it would improve my employment prospects. I felt the MRUP programme was the best option because it is recognised by both the Irish Planning Institute and the Royal Town Planning Institute and is highly regarded by many in the field. |

After obtaining my B.A. in Geography and Economics from UCD in 2001, I decided to pursue my interest in how economics can be applied in environmental policymaking by undertaking a M.Sc., and later a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies with the School of Geography, Planning and Economics (GPEP). GPEP was the right option for me. My Ph.D. research aim was to explore the question of public opposition to municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal infrastructure provision and the potential role of compensation in facilitating the siting of contentious landfill and incinerator facilities. |
