Who is the UCD MSc Biotechnology and Business for?
The UCD MSc Biotechnology and Business programme is designed for life-science and chemistry graduates who want to pursue a career in management / entrepreneurship in technology and science-based fields, whether seeking a first job in a biotechnology / biopharmaceutical company, starting your own small business or creating new opportunities in larger companies.
Course objectives of UCD MSc Biotechnology and Business
The UCD MSc Biotechnology and Business programme focuses on broadening your knowledge and understanding of Biotechnology while giving you a comprehensive Business education. You will learn to identify and solve business problems in local and international settings, enhance your communication and leadership skills and improve your ability for independent thinking and developing creative solutions.
The MSc n Biotechnology and Business is the result of close collaboration between UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science and UCD Smurfit School of Business.
Eligibility of UCD MSc Biotechnology and Business
Candidates must have obtained at least an upper Second Class Honours Grade or equivalent in a biology or chemistry primary degree. This includes a BSc in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Physiology, Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry or an equivalent qualification.
Graduates with equivalent qualifications in related areas of science and technology or with proven relevant industrial experience will be considered for places. The number of places is limited and selection will be made on the candidate's performance in his/her primary degree and experience.

The UCD MSc in Biotechnology and Business provides the theoretical knowledge needed to understand the latest know-how being applied in the design and development of new and highly innovative biotechnological and pharmaceutical products. It also provides industrially relevant expertise in drug discovery and development, bioprocess technology, regulatory affairs and the design and management of clinical trials.
The programme simultaneously provides an understanding of, and skills required for, entrepreneurship while learning to manage human, financial and technological capital. The combined expertise in Biotechnology and Business will enable you to innovate in complex business environments from small start-up companies to large scale multinational corporations.

This advanced graduate degree has been developed in consultation with employers and is specifically tailored to meet their needs. A major advantage of this degree programme is that you will complete a business project that will be undertaken within the Biotechnology industry. One of the factors that will determine your field of expertise will be the development of this business plan and case study which aim to develop project management, business planning and research skills.

Programme Structure of the UCD MSc Biotechnology and Business
This is a full-time, one-year programme, divided into three semesters (from early September until the end of August). The programme consists of lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and case studies. To complete the MSc in Biotechnology and Business you must successfully complete 9 core modules and two option modules. You must also successfully complete a business plan and biotechnology case study.

The programme is designed to accommodate applicants who have successfully completed a primary degree in a biological or chemical science. This includes a BSc in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Physiology, Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry or an equivalent qualification.
If English is not your native language, unless you have done your primary degree through English in an English speaking country, an English language qualification is required for all programmes. English Language qualifications include a minimum score of 550 (213 computer based) for TOEFL i.e. Test of English as a Foreign Language, or 6.0 for IELTS i.e. International English Language Testing System. Other evidence of proficiency in English may be accepted such as the Cambridge Certificate.
