Irish Geography

Appointment of Editor

Dr Padraig Carmody will complete his term as editor of Irish Geography in the coming months, having successfully managed the transition from local publishing to the Taylor and Francis publishing company.  The Committee of the Geographical Society of Ireland now seek applications from suitably qualified persons for this post.

Irish Geography is an internationally recognized, peer reviewed journal that focuses on the geography of Ireland.  It has been published by the Geographical Society of Ireland since 1944.  Publication and distribution were handled locally until very recently, when the decision was taken to enter into an agreement with Taylor and Francis, an internationally recognized academic publisher, to publish and distribute the journal.

The editor is central in ensuring that the journal maintains and enhances its position as a high quality publication.  It is a post with significant responsibility that requires attention to detail with a focus on quality and delivery.  S/he must have an excellent command of the English language and have appropriate computer skills that will permit the efficient discharge of the duties of the post.

The Editor will be appointed by the Committee of the GSI for a period of three years.  S/he will be eligible for reappointment.  S/he shall be a member of the Committee of GSI (ex officio) and shall make regular reports to the Committee on the affairs of the publication.  While enjoying a great measure of editorial independence, editorial policy and strategic planning for the journal remain in the hands of the Committee.

The duties of the post are:

  • Ensure the timely production of the journal by providing Taylor and Francis with appropriately edited papers that are of high quality.
  • Liaise with the Journal’s board of international advisers.
  • Maintain and enhance the international reputation of the journal.
  • Maintain and enhance the production values of the journal.
  • Act as Liaison between the Committee of the GSI and Taylor and Francis.

There is no application form.  Anyone interested should write (hard copy or e-mail) to the address given below, and indicate why s/he is interested in the post.  The Committee will consider all applications with a view to appointing the editor in early Spring.  Therefore applications must be received by the end of January 2009.
