Student Events in the School of Medicine & Medical Science

Your student life in the School of Medicine & Medical Science begins iduring your first year with Orientation Week and culminates the annual Gala Dinner to celebrate the conferring of students with the School. Between those two events is a very busy and rewarding academic and social agenda.


Orientation & Freshers' Weeks

The activities that take place during Orientation week allows you to familiarise yourself with your programme, UCD campus and the student supports available. For International students there are a number of specific events that allow to to familiarise and establish your student life in Dublin and Ireland.

Fresher's Week is an opportunity for new students to find out about social groups available on campus, including MedSoc, the hosts of Med Day and MedBall and the society for all things Medicine. There is a society relevant to any interest on campus and during freshers week they host a number of events both on and off-campus allow students to meet new people and see what societies are the right fit for them. Breakfast with the Dean

The Dean of Medicine, Prof. William G Powderly hosts a number of breakfast receptions during the first semester to welcome all incoming Medicine and Graduate Entry to Medicine students. The relaxed and informal setting allows small groups of incoming students to meet the Dean and senior academics early in their Academic career at UCD. White Coat Ceremony

 White Coat Ceremony Image (jpeg)  In January 2010 the UCD School of Medicine and Medical Science held their first White Coat Ceremony to formally acknowledge student progression from  pre-clinical to clinical studies. Students are 'robed' by senior acdemics with a symbolic white coat and are reminded of their attendant responsibility to "Do good for the health of the people they serve."


Malaysia Night

Over 10 years ago, a group of Malaysian students commence in the Penang Medical College/UCD/RCSI twinning programme. Students that are part of the PMC twinning programme study for 3 years in Dublin and then complete their clinical studies at Penang Medical College in Malaysia. The PMC Student Association showcase Malaysian culture to the rest of the School through music, food and dance on an annual basis.


PMC Farewell

Once students of the Penang Medical College complete their pre-clinical studies at UCD they return to Malaysia, leaving behind good friends and acting as ambassadors to encourage future Malaysian students to study in Ireland. The school hosts a farewell reception where students are formally presented with a Certificate to mark the completion of their studies.  PMC Farewell Image (jpeg) 

 School of Medicine and Medical Science Conferring

The major conferring ceremony for the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences takes place in early June. The University and School community assembles to honour its new graduates and celebrate their achievement. An early conferral ceremony is held in May in order to accommodate International students.

 Gala Dinner

The Gala Dinner is held annually on the evening after the June conferring ceremony. Students enjoy a formal meal with classmates, Academics and School staff in order to celebrate their achievement. A number of awards are given out in recognition of students and Academics within the School.  Gala Dinner 2011 Image
