UCD Humanities Institute of Ireland (HII) was established in 2002 with funding from the Higher Education Authority's Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions (PRTLI) to provide a creative architectural and conceptual space for interdisciplinary research in the humanities and allied disciplines. The HII is developing and implementing a series of interdisciplinary research programmes under the theme Culture, Society and Change. There are currently 27 doctoral scholars and 2 post-doctoral scholars attached to the Humanities Institute working on research topics from a wide range of perspectives within the arts and human sciences. The programmes are complemented by the development of an innovative Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) that entails the creation of an electronic platform for research materials held within various UCD libraries and archives. The Humanities Institute is based in a state of the art building on the UCD Belfield campus.
The HII forms an integral element within UCD's strategic mission to develop as a research intensive university. The HII has set itself the objective of enhancing the critical mass and international visibility of interdisciplinary research in the humanities at UCD by acting as a laboratory for the study of culture and the human experience. It is working to complement research undertaken within related UCD Schools while concurrently providing a dynamic environment for the delivery of interdisciplinary or postdisciplinary research that transcends the intellectual boundaries of a particular subject or discipline. In the medium to longer terms, the HII aspires to develop as a driving force for knowledge transfer and sharing within UCD and in the context of the humanities and social sciences in Ireland and Europe.
If you are interested in holding your event in the Humanities Institute seminar room please click here for guidelines on booking. Facilities include dual data projectors, a laptop, video conferencing and more. There is a small charge for use of our state of the art facilities.
