Identities and Histories in and around South Tyrol / Alto Adige
Dates: 2-3 October 2010
Venue: Room H204, UCD Humanities Institute
In 2009 Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino celebrated and commemorated Andreas Hofer. The way the Tyrolean people’s hero, rebel and freedom fighter is remembered in public challenges traditional views and reveals emerging new discourses of memory and reflections on the past, both in the writing of history and in the creation of literature.
This two-day international conference, which will be conducted both in Germand and in English will focus on:
- Memory traditions and cultures in Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino
- The past, present and possible future roles of historical and literary writing in the context of changing political and societal environments
- Comparisons to other multilingual and multicultural regions in Europe
- Models of regional and individual identities in Tyrol, South Tyrol, Trentino
- Minorities and majorities in South Tyrol
- South Tyrol between tradition and modernity?
- The notion of South Tyrol as a model of autonomy

First International Conference for 'Mass-Customization' for Language Teaching and Learning
Date: 26 - 27 August 2010
Mass-customization in industrial terms refers to the possibility of producing fairly standardized goods for a mass market while at the same time tailoring them to the individual customer’s preferences and needs by allowing for a certain degree of choice. Third level education has undergone similar developments with the introduction of modularization which enables students to create their individual study programme through a free selection of elective modules in addition to mandatory core modules. While language instructors in particular have always tried to cater for their students’ individual differences, preferences and needs, these “customizations” have generally been limited to certain situations or students. Applying the idea of modularization within language classes would create a situation in which teaching and learning can be truly customized for all attendees regardless of class size.

The Advent Project ten years on: Early Medieval Chant and Ritual in Rome
This inter-disciplinary symposium, to mark the tenth anniversary of the publication of James McKinnon's The Advent Project, has been organised by the UCD School of Music and the Faculty of Theology, NUI Maynooth and supported by the UCD Humanities Institute and the Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute for the Study of Irish History and Civilisation.
The Advent Project: The Later-Seventh-Century Creation of the Roman Mass Proper published posthumously in 2000 remains a major contributor to our understanding of the formation of the medieval chant tradition in Rome. McKinnon's work has stimulated much debate in musicological circles during the last decade but appears to have made little impact in liturgical and ritual studies. The organisers of this symposium hope to stimulate a fruitful dialogue and discussion between chant scholars, historians and liturgists and also welcome participants from other disciplinary backgrounds with an interest in early medieval Rome.
