An historical perspective on language, gender and culture in the context of the ‘Irish-Ireland’ ideology: The Irish Independent and Irish language material 1905 – 1932
This project examines the Irish Independent’s Irish language material vis-à-vis Irish language developments in the early twentieth century. This journalistic material provides a critical and conceptual framework for the assessment of the influence of culture on the media. Special attention is given to the themes of language, gender and culture in the context of the ‘Irish-Ireland’ ideology which was a prominent feature of the Gaelic cultural revival in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Aoife Whelan is funded under an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences Postgraduate Scholarship. Aoife is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Newspaper and Periodical History Forum of Ireland (http://www.newspapersperiodicals.org/)

Sa togra seo, ríofar ábhar Gaeilge an Irish Independent i gcomhthéacs fhorbairtí teanga ag tús an fhichiú haois. Cuireann an saothar iriseoireachta seo fóram critice agus coincheapúla ar fáil ina scrúdaítear tionchar chúrsaí cultúrtha ar na meáin. Tugtar aird ar leith ar chúrsaí teanga, ar inscne agus ar chultúr i gcomhthéasc idé-eolaíocht 'Irish-Ireland', gné thábhachtach den athbheochan chultúrtha ag deireadh an naoú haois déag agus ag tús an fhichiú haois.
