PhD Programme

The PhD is a three to four year programme of independent but supervised research which makes an original contribution to an historical subject. A doctorate, which is usually around 90,000 words in length, is both challenging and rewarding.

Before making an application for a PhD, please contact a member of the academic staff who is most closely related to your field of interest. Members of the School have a very broad chronological and geographical range of interests, ranging from the early Middle Ages to the present and specialising in Irish and International history. This is reflected in both staff research and graduate research. The School also has a number of research centres, which are the focus of exciting individual and collaborative work.

Entry

The minimum entrance requirement for entry onto the PhD programme is a B+ or GPA (3.6) at MA level in History or a cognate discipline, together with a  strong undergraduate degree (a first or a high 2:1).  You should have completed a sizable dissertation as part of your MA degree. Students whose first language is not English will also be asked to submit evidence of their language competency.
