The Culture of Revolution in Nineteenth-Century Europe

Researcher: Dr David Kerr

This comparative project analyses the mythology of revolution, the manner in which revolution was perceived and narrated, across the national revolutionary traditions in the nineteenth century. It argues that in both their theory and practice the many revolutions of nineteenth-century Europe owe less to 1789 than is generally thought. Instead, they articulate a discrete and coherent (but little recognised) culture of revolution capable of effecting and managing political change while limiting social disruption. Research has so far concentrated on the meanings of revolution in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
