The objective of this research is to contribute to the ongoing debate by analysing trends in the preservation of archives in Ireland and by identifying areas where there are significant gaps in the nation’s collective memory. It will address acquisition and appraisal strategies from the traditional and pragmatic to the dynamic and scientific placing a particular emphasis on documentation strategies and macroappraisal. Strategies which might be used to respond to national archival amnesia will be identified.
