There is no systematic study of the provision of health care in eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland. This project examines the inherent difficulties in 'making a medical living' and the factors influencing the acceptance of practitioners by communities. A central theme of the project will be the relationship between the varieties of medical approaches to disease, illness and treatment in English and Irish speaking communities. This aspect of the project will draw on the rich primary source material in the National Folklore Collection at UCD.
