Biography:
|
Following completion of my PhD in 2004, I was appointed lecturer at the Department of History at the University of Warwick. I returned to University College Dublin in
2006. My publications include Negotiating
insanity in the southeast of Ireland, 1820-1900 (Manchester: Manchester
University Press, 2012); with Maria Luddy, Cultures of Care in Irish Medical History 1750-1970 (Houndmills: Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and numerous articles. From 2006 I have been UCD Director of the Centre for the History of Medicine of Ireland (CHOMI). I currently serve on numerous academic
committees and advisory boards including the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland Library and
Archive Committee, the Royal Irish Academy Executive Committee for Historical
Sciences, the Royal Irish Academy History of Science and Medicine Subcommittee
and the Economic and Social History Society for Ireland. I am also membership
Secretary of the Society for the Social History of Medicine and member of the
American Association for the History of Medicine. |
Research Interests
| My own research has focused on three themes: the history of insanity in the nineteenth century, medical practice and the medical marketplace in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the regional impact of the Great Famine in Ireland. I am currently working on two research projects: In July 2009, with Professor Hilary Marland, University of Warwick, I was awarded a Wellcome Trust Project Grant 'Madness, Migration and the Irish in Lancashire, c.1850-1921'. This project takes the particular case study of migration to Lancashire from the final years of the Great Famine to Irish Independence to explore the relationship between Irish migration and mental disorder. I have also published on the inherent difficulties in 'making a medical living' in nineteenth-century Ireland. This project examines the importance of medical dispensaries and doctors in Ireland and the factors influencing the cultural acceptance of medical science in Irish communities. |
