Biography:
| I was educated at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Following the completion of my PhD, I stayed in St Andrews in the post of Project Manager of the British Academy and AHRC-funded French Vernacular Book Project. In 2006, I moved to Ireland, where I took up a Lectureship in the History of the Media at the School of History and Archives here in UCD. My research and teaching interests lie broadly in the social and cultural history of Europe
between 1450 and 1700. Currently, the focus of my research,
funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is on the development of the book trade in Spain and Portugal before 1650. From 2011-2014, I will serve as Vice-Principal of the College of Arts and Celtic Studies, overseeing the Graduate School. I am also Director of the Centre for the History of the Media, the founding editor of Palgrave Studies in the History of the Media and sit on the editorial board of St Andrews Studies in French History and Culture. From 2012-2015, I will serve as Secretary of The Society for the Study of French History, having previously acted as Membership Secretary. I am also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. |
Research Interests
| My research interests lie principally in the communications culture of sixteenth and seventeenth-century Europe, especially in France and Spain, and on interdisciplinary approaches to the history of the early modern book. My doctorate took as its subject the image of Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587) and how this was represented in literature and polemic over the course of one of the most turbulent periods in French history, the Religious Wars. This work was underpinned by bibliographical investigation undertaken as part of the French Vernacular Book Project, led by Professor Andrew Pettegree of the University of St Andrews. From 2001-2006, I served as project manager of this British Academy and AHRC-funded project which sought to compile an analytical short title catalogue of books published in French before 1601 2 vols. (Leiden: Brill, 2007). After moving to Ireland in 2006, my attention has shifted westwards to the publishing industries of Spain and Portugal, where I have attempted to refine the methodology of the French Project to a different print domain. In 2010, the first fruits of this labour were published by Brill - Libros Ibéricos: Libros publicados en español o portugués o en la Península Ibérica antes de 1601. A significant award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (2011-2014) will permit the continutation of this project up to 1650. These projects will be published online as part of the Universal Short Title Catalogue Project. The USTC will bring together all of Europe's national bibliographies into a single searchable resource. It is hoped that this resource, made available free of charge, will help transform our understanding of the first great age of print. Once the bibliographical work has drawn to a close, I am hoping to undertake a comparative assessment of how the print cultures of France, Spain and England evolved between 1470 and 1650. |
