Job Grading


Job Grading is a management driven process for administrative posts up to, and including, SAOIV level.  The Job Grading process is used when:

  • A new post is created (temporary or permanent) for more than one year 
  • A vacancy arises in a post that has never been graded
  • Any changes are made to an existing post that has become vacant
  • A temporary post of less than one year, which has never been graded, is extended 

It should be noted that Job Grading is the assessment of a position, not a person.

For grading of administrative posts above SAOIV level please contact UCD HR Recruitment. 

Currently, the Job Grading Committee is not considering applications for the regrading of existing posts.

How It Works

Step 1: The Vice–President/College Principal/ Head of School/Unit, having read the Policy, submits the following documentation to UCD HR, Promotions and Grading ensuring that all details are correct and forms are signed in the appropriate place:

Step 2: This documentation is forwarded to the Job Grading Committee (JGC) by UCD HR, Promotions and Grading prior to the next JGC meeting.

Step 3: The JGC, having read the Policy, assesses all the applications against the following factors: Work Complexity; Decision Making; Relationships; Capability; Impact  and Supervision and agrees a grade for each post.

Step 4: Following the JGC meeting UCD HR, Promotions and Grading will notify the relevant Vice–President/College Principal/Head of School/Unit of the outcome of their  Job Grading application.  

 Step 5:  New or vacant re-graded posts will be forwarded to UCD HR, Recruitment for advertising.


 Membership of the Job Grading Committee:

  • Head of School (Chair) or other nominee of the President (currently Professor Tom Bolger)
  • Union Representative (currently Ms Margaret Brindley)
  • Senior member of staff of UCD HR (currently Ms Elaine Hassett)
