Role of the HR Partner

The role of the HR Partner is similar to that of a local HR Manager whose primary function is to support, advise and coach the College Principal, Heads of School / Units and managers in relation to good staff management practices. HR Partners support managers in the effective implementation of all UCD HR policies, practices and university initiatives relating to staff management.  In addition, the HR Partner is available to assist individual staff members who may require confidential guidance, advice or support.

Although reporting into the HR function, HR Partners spend most of their time physically located in the College or unit they support. This ensures that they are accessible to those they are supporting, allows them to build a greater understanding of the operations of their College or unit and identify how the appropriate application of HR policies and best practice can contribute to the success of the school or unit in achieving their goals. This can include specific projects relating to strategy clarification, staffing models, staff planning, management reviews, staff engagement, change management.

HR Partners work closely with specialist, central HR groups such as Organisation Development, Leadership Development and Employee Relations to deliver excellent services.

In the small number of areas that do not have a designated HR Partner, managers can still access specialist services by direct contact with the particular area, e.g. ER, Leadership, Recruitment Services, Pensions, all of whom have contact details available on the HR Web, or if in doubt UCD HR Customer Services at ext 4900 will provide contact details. The vast majority of staff queries should also be able to be successfully dealt with in the same manner. All staff can raise queries or seek information via the ASK HR facility also available on the HR Website.
