Employment Permits

Overview

Employees coming to UCD from outside the EU/EEA generally require an employment permit to work legally in Ireland. As there are a number of options available please consult the information below to find out who needs an employment permit, which form of permit is most suitable and how to acquire one. Managers should familiarise themselves with the information below prior to engaging the employee on contract.

Who needs an "employment permit”?

Individuals entering Ireland from outside the EEA for the purpose of work.  The EEA is defined as the EU + Norway, Switzerland, Lichtenstein and Iceland.

The Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (DJEI) has determined that citizens of Romania and Bulgaria require an employment permit for the first 12 months of their employment in Ireland in certain circumstances.  Please contact HR for further information.

Which “employment permit” is best?

Academic staff:

  • Work Permit: Between €30,000 - €59,999 and a minimum of a 3 month contract
  • Green Card: Over €60,000 and a minimum of a 2 year contract

Researchers:

  • Hosting agreement: Over €30,000 (with dependents or €25,000 without dependents), and a minimum of a 3 month contract
