The Advent Project ten years on: Early Medieval Chant and Ritual in Rome

Friday, 19 February 2010

This inter-disciplinary symposium, to mark the tenth anniversary of the publication of James McKinnon's The Advent Project, has been organised by the UCD School of Music and the Faculty of Theology, NUI Maynooth and supported by the UCD Humanities Institute and the Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute for the Study of Irish History and Civilisation.

The Advent Project: The Later-Seventh-Century Creation of the Roman Mass Proper published posthumously in 2000 remains a major contributor to our understanding of the formation of the medieval chant tradition in Rome.  McKinnon's work has stimulated much debate in musicological circles during the last decade but appears to have made little impact in liturgical and ritual studies.  The organisers of this symposium hope to stimulate a fruitful dialogue and discussion between chant scholars, historians and liturgists and also welcome participants from other disciplinary backgrounds with an interest in early medieval Rome.
