Innovation, society and culture: Workshop on Intangible Cultural Heritages

Date: 16 October 2009 (2-4pm)

Venue: Old Physics Theatre, Newman House, 86 St. Stephen's Green, Dublin 2

Workshop Directors: Dr Marc Caball (HII) and Dr Mick Wilson (Gradcam)

Jointly organised by the UCD Humanities Institute of Ireland and the Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media, this workshop focuses on the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage which entered into force on 20 April 2006. The Convention represents the culmination of three decades of policy development in respect of cultural expression and practises since these issues were first raised through UNESCO in 1973. The Convention holds that intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is manifest through diverse media such as oral traditions and expressions, performing arts, social practises, traditional craftsmanship and knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe. Given the critical, but largely unrecognised importance of ICH to sustainable social and economic innovation in Ireland, this seminar will seek to develop applied policy prespectives which inform current debates on the nature of innovation and the knowledge society in Ireland.
