Visualising Antiquarianism in Ireland

Friday, 11 September 2009

A symposium as part of the UCD HII Print Culture Series with the Biblioteca Universalis Antiquaria

Date: 11 September 2009

Venue: Room H204, UCD HII, Belfield

This will be a one-day symposium bringing together scholars from different backgrounds to discuss the pre-disciplinary development of antiquarian traditions in Ireland with a view to reflecting on the contemporary placement of humanities scholars within society. The specific theme that will be explored is the visualization and mediation of antiquarian knowledge through print culture, etchings, paintings, etc. Antiquarian illustration and representation will be contextualized within the artistic traditions of the early modern era. This will lead into the contextualization of contemporary visualization and mediation of archaeology and heritage within broader movements in contemporary visual culture and contemporary art.
