Female relationships in television adaptations of Elizabeth Gaskell’s fiction: feminist and post-feminist conflicts and intersections

This project explores conflict and connection between feminist and post-feminist ideals through their representations in adaptations of Elizabeth Gaskell’s fiction. It understands these adaptations as a space through which feminist debate can take place and examines the potential role of television adaptation in recuperating proto-feminist and feminist ideas in contemporary post-feminist culture. It is particularly interested in the adaptations’ representations of homosocial connections between women and explores themes of friendship, sisterhood, and mother-daughter and intergenerational bonds, as well as constructions of female communities
