Melodrama and Religious Affect in Bestselling British Fiction, c.1880-1910

My PhD focuses on bestselling religious fiction in Britain between 1880 and 1910. Its main objective is to examine the ways in which the religious impulse is rendered affectively within selected texts through the techniques of melodrama, and to compare popular religious novels of the time with their later stage adaptations. Within the study I look at four central issues: the religious body, the place of the occult, spatial affect, and melodrama proper. Authors included in the study are Marie Corelli, Guy Thorne, Richard Marsh, Hall Caine, Mrs Humphry Ward, and Robert Hichens.
