The Irish Nursing Journals Collection

The Irish Nursing Journals Collection, the online searchable digital archive of historic nursing journals was added to the UCD Digiatl Library platform in September 2012; see:

Originally founded in 1919 as a branch of the Irish Women Workers' Union, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) is the main professional association for nurses and midwives in Ireland. Since its inception, the organisation has been disseminating pertinent information to its members through regular publications; initially as a members’ newsletter, and eventually as a professionaljournal, under-going various title changes, as well as changes in its scope and content. The INMO maintains back issues of its publications from 1925 up until the present day. The UCD Irish Centre for Nursing & Midwifery History, in partnership with UCD Library and the INMO, initiated a collaborative digitisation project in 2010. The aim of the project was to digitise, catalogue and preserve the holdings of this particular journal; as well as to build a distinct and bidirectional knowledge transfer between UCD and the INMO.

The project was able to build on UCD Library's technical infrastructure, the UCD Digital Library, for digital curation, continuing access, and long-term preservation; as well as the professional skills of the team. The end result was a unique and rare run of journal issues, documenting the changing professional, educational and social structures of the nursing and midwifery professions in Ireland; as well as labour and women's histories. This collection incorporates 398 journal issues as a single collection, maintaining the original linear journal run, whilst preserving the distinction between the various names changes. The following lists the series of name changes throughout the years:

1. Irish Nurses’ Union Gazette 1925-1933.

2. The Irish Nurses’ Journal 1936-1939.

3. The Irish Nurses’ Magazine 1939-1961.

4. Irish Nurses’ Magazine 1961-1963.

5. Irish Nurse 1963-1967.

6. Irish Nurses’ Journal 1968-1971.

The collection was co-funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

Collections in the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) library are made available to members of the INMO. Access to collections, or parts of collections, may be withdrawn from time to time as material is removed for conservation or preservation reformatting.

Archival collection at the Irish Centre for Nursing and Midwifery History

At this time the UCD Irish Centre for Nursing & Midwifery History is developing a nursing and midwifery archive. This will incorporate a collection of archival materials, including documentary materials, photographs and other artefacts and when fully operational, this material will be available as a national resource for students and researchers. The archive will include early books and journals, official documents, letters and personal papers. It will also include a photographic collection and a collection of other artefacts, such as nurses' badges, uniforms and technical equipment associated with the clinical work of nurses and midwives. Oral histories will be available and other digitally-prepared resources will be developed.

To donate documentary materials and artefacts to the Centre, please contact Prof Gerard Fealy at +353 (0)1 716 6461 or
