Welcome to Celtic Civilisation (incorporating Welsh and Early Irish)

What is Celtic Civilisation (incorporating Welsh and Early Irish)?

Building on long-established specialized expertise in the area of Celtic Studies, the subject of Celtic Civilisation enables students to form an overview of the history, literature, language and culture of the Celts over the centuries. No previous knowledge of the Celtic languages is required, but students may choose if they wish to get an introduction to Early Irish, Welsh, Medieval Welsh, and Modern Breton. Celtic Civilisation can be taken as a 40 credit minor, 50 credit major or 60 credit major.

Many of the modules are popular stand-alone electives for students of other subjects across the university interested in aspects of the Celts. Beginning language modules incorporated in the programme also are popular electives in the Horizons programme.

Celtic Civilisation is a programme which takes full advantage of the modular degree system in UCD to integrate study from relevant subjects. Core modules can be found specifically for Celtic Civilisation (CCIV), but the degree programme also allows a choice from Early Irish (EMIR), Welsh (WEL), Irish Folklore (IRFL), History (HIS), Archaeology (ARCH), Irish Studies (IRST) and Linguistics (LING).

Students interested in Early Irish, Welsh and Breton may also pursue these languages as electives with any other degree programme.
