Celtic Civilisation provides an overview of the peoples known as the Celts from their continental origins to the flowering of Irish and Welsh culture in the Middle Ages and beyond, giving an insight into their history, society, religion, literature and art.

The written sources, studied in English translation, reveal a rich and varied culture of international importance. Students will gain a knowledge of the material available and the way in which scholars in different disciplines – archaeological, historical and literary – study and interpret them.

After an integrated Level 1 programme students go on to create their own combination of modules consisting of core modules plus options from a wide range of relevant topics in Archaeology, Early Irish, History, Irish Folklore, Linguistics, Modern Irish and Welsh.

It is possible to study the following Celtic languages at beginner's level and beyond: Early Irish, Modern Irish, Scots Gaelic, Modern Welsh, Medieval Welsh and Modern Breton.
