Welcome to Welsh

Welsh is the strongest of the Celtic languages, and is widely used by some half a million people. It has a long and distinguished literature and a vibrant youth culture. There are obvious links to the linguistic situation in Ireland and also striking differences.

Students studying Welsh either as a single beginner’s module or a suite of modules leading to greater competence acquire a basic knowledge of a modern Celtic language and its culture. It is ideal for students who wish to pursue a language outside of the traditional Arts language degree programmes. Students of Celtic Civilisation choosing Welsh, Breton and Early Irish will be better prepared for postgraduate study and gain a different additional, invaluable perspective on their course material.

Modules in Modern Breton, the only Celtic  language spoken on continental Europe, are also offered.
