MLitt in Linguistics

The MLitt in Linguistics is a research degree. Students who have prior training in Linguistics, typically a BA (or equivalent) or an MA, work on a specific research project in one of the areas of research in linguistics at UCD. Interdisciplinary research projects involving the different areas represented in the school and the university are very welcome.

* What will I learn?
You will gain in-depth knowledge of your chosen field by doing independent research in linguistics.

* Who can enroll in the MLitt?
The MLitt is best suited for students who have completed a BA or an MA (or equivalent) in Linguistics and want to explore a specific topic in more detail either for professional reasons or in order to prepare for a career in Linguistics.

*What does an MLitt involve?
You will work closely with a staff member, your thesis supervisor, who has experience in the area. You will define your research question(s) and the activities involved in pursuing the research with your supervisor. Throughout the project, you will engage regularly with your supervisor about your progress. You may also take one or more of the postgraduate modules in Linguistics and/or other areas relevant to your project.

Note:

* Students typically spend between 35 to 40hs a week on their research project over a period of about two years. The degree can also be completed part time.
* It may be possible for students who are accepted for an MLitt to convert to a PhD after a period of time working on their MLitt.
* Students who wish to apply for the MLitt in Linguistics will have to discuss their thesis proposal with a potential supervisor in Linguistics in UCD as part of the application process. The thesis proposal is not binding but allows us to determine the area of Linguistics the student wishes to do research in.
