Fáilte chuig and Nua-Ghaeilge
Fáilte romhat chuig an Nua-Ghaeilge. Tá sí tábhachtach freisin mar mhionteanga de chuid an domhain, comhartha luachmhar ar an iolrachas daonna agus ar fhiúntas na gcultúr nach mbaineann le hollteangacha an lae inniu. is cúis áthais dúinn freastal orthu siúd a bhraitheann gairm chuici.Múintear modúil ar réimse leathan gnéithe de theanga agus litríocht na Gaeilge ó na meánaoiseanna i leith. Dírítear iad ar mhic léinn den uile leibhéal, ó thosaitheoirí go lucht sároilte iarchéime. Dírítear cuid de na modúil ar ábhar scópúil; tugann modúil eile deis do mhic léinn mionanailís a dhéanamh ar shaothair faoi leith. Déanaimid cúram de chlár fairsing saothar ina bhfeictear teanga na Gaeilge faoi bhláth i gcaitheamh na n-aoiseanna ainneoin an anró. Orthu sin tá an teanga féin, an litríocht idir phrós is fhilíocht, an litríocht bhéil, na meáin nua, an dioscúrsa baineann, Gaeilge na hAlban. Féachaimid le lón intinne, agus lón samhlaíochta agus lón cultúrtha a sholáthar d’ár mic léinn. Is í an Ghaeilge teanga oibre agus teanga theagaisc na Nua-Ghaeilge i UCD.
Fearaimid fáilte speisialta rompu siúd a thagann chuig an Nua-Ghaeilge mar ábhar roghnach. Is mór linn mic léinn a aithníonn an oidhreacht luachmhar a fuaireadar ar scoil, agus ar mhaith leo í a chaomhnú agus a fhorbairt tuilleadh fad is go mbíonn siad ag gabháil d’ábhair eile.
Ar mhaithe lena bhféiniúlacht chultúrtha a scrúdú nó a fhorbairt a thagann mic léinn áirithe chuig an Nua-Ghaeilge, nó ar mhaithe le pléisiúr na foghlama. Ar mhaithe le fostaíocht a thagann mic léinn eile, i gceann éigin de na réimsí uile ina bhfuil an Ghaeilge riachtachach nó cabhraitheach: an t-oideachas, na meáin, na tionscail chultúrtha, an saol poiblí, an scríbhneoireacht chruthaitheach. Cuirimid fáilte rompu uile mar mhic léinn agus mar leathbhádóirí linn i gcúram acadúil na Gaeilge.
Welcome to Modern Irish. We are privileged to have academic responsibility in UCD for Ireland’s native language and for the forms of discourse through which it has found its richest expression. Irish is a beautiful language with an evocative and intriguing literature. It is an important dimension of Irish and European culture from the earliest historical period to the present. It is also important as one of the world’s lesser-used languages, rightly cherished as a mark of human diversity and of the value of cultures that are too often obscured by more dominant languages. We are delighted to assist those who feel themselves drawn to it.
We teach modules on a wide range of topics covering the period from late medieval times to the present day. These cater for a spectrum of learners from beginners to advanced postgraduates. Survey-type modules are broad in scope; other courses allow students to focus closely on particular texts or themes. The teaching programme reflects the creative potential of a language that has continued to flower in spite of adversity. It deals with areas such as the language itself, traditional and modern prose and poetry, oral literature, contemporary media, feminine discourse and Scottish Gaelic. Our aim is to create an atmosphere that provides intellectual, creative and cultural sustenance and challenge for our students. Irish is the working language of the unit and the language of instruction.
We particularly welcome students who value the Irish cultural heritage they received at school but whose primary areas of study lie elsewhere. We encourage them to take Irish-language electives in order to maintain and deepen their knowledge of the language.
Certain students take Modern Irish in order to reflect upon or to develop their own cultural identity or for the intrinsic pleasure of studying our subject. Others are drawn to the prospect of employment in one of the many areas where Irish is either essential or advantageous: education, media and communication, cultural industries, public life, creative writing. We welcome them all as students and as collaborators as we work to advance our understanding of the language and its culture.
