Statement by Professor Orla Feely on Budget 2018
Commenting on today’s budget Professor Orla Feely, UCD Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact, said, “I am pleased to see following today’s budget announcement that Science Foundation Ireland has been allocated additional funding to establish the SFI Future Milk Research Centre, led by Teagasc. This Centre, which includes University College Dublin researchers, will be key to the growth and development of Ireland’s dairy and agricultural industry.”
“I am delighted to see that increased capital funding will allow Ireland finally to join the European Southern Observatory (ESO), which is a significant development for our astronomers in UCD’s School of Physics and in the many businesses that will benefit from this membership.”
“I am also pleased with the announcement of additional funding to develop world-class researchers, across all disciplines, and to fund a new PhD and research Masters programme. While we still have a long way to go to meet the targets set out in the government’s Innovation 2020 strategy, this investment in research talent supports the vision laid out in that strategy.”
