Summer Internship

Today’s global economy demands graduates with a global perspective. The UCD Summer Internship Programme provides challenging international work experience in a uniquely stimulating location – the modern European city of Dublin. The rich culture of Dublin experienced through the lens of an internship offers students the opportunity to integrate into Irish life. Students benefit greatly by fine-tuning their communication skills and developing practical professional skills. Placements are in prestigious Irish and International companies in varied industry sectors, in addition to smaller innovative organizations.

Internship Placements
The eight week Programme consists of a six-week internship placement at a leading Irish company. From business to the arts, the internship team can provide a broad spectrum of intellectually engaging internships based on any field of interest, internship goals, and skills. The following is a selection of some of the industries available:

Arts & Culture
Business, Finance & Economics
International Studies, International Relations
Health services & Social Issues
Marketing, Public Relations & Advertising
Recreation, Leisure & Hospitality

Irish History
In addition to the Internship, students are required to take a special module focusing on Irish History and Culture. This module is taught intensively during the first week of the Programme. Field trips to places of historical interest are an integral component of this module.

Programme Structure
April
Telephone placement meeting to discuss priorities and Internship preferences.

June – July
Week 1 Orientation & Irish History module at UCD campus.
Week 2-7 Professional internship placement in Dublin.
Week 8 Presentation of research paper at UCD campus.

Assessment
As a complement to their Internship, students will complete the following:
Weekly reflective journal
Research Paper
Presentation of Research paper

Students will also complete a research paper for the Irish History module.

Credit Transfer
3 US credits each are awarded for the Internship and Irish History module.
UCD will send an official transcript to the home institution at the end of the Programme. The home institution decides on credits to be awarded. We will be pleased to provide full information to enable institutions to make decisions regarding the transfer of credits.

Cultural – Social Programme
An essential element of the UCD Summer Internship is for students to experience Irish society and culture through an extensive series of excursions and field trips in Dublin and across the island of Ireland.
Typical activities include:

  • Wicklow Mountain Walk
  • Hurling match
  • Trip to the West of Ireland
  • Castle Tour
  • Irish Dancing
  • Traditional Irish Music

Eligibility
The minimum GPA requirement is 3.00. In addition to completing the UCD on-line application process, a transcript of academic record and letter of recommendation should be sent to the UCD Centre for Study Abroad before the application deadline.
