The UCD Engineering Study Abroad Programme offers visiting undergraduate students a unique educational opportunity to participate fully in the academic and social life of one of Ireland’s largest Universities, offering the widest range of engineering disciplines. The Engineering educational philosophy at UCD emphasises mastery of analytical skills and the use of quantitative methods.
Facilities
The UCD Engineering and Materials Science Centre houses the UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering and the UCD School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. The UCD Newstead Building is the location of the UCD School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering. Engineering Study Abroad students will attend lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals and other module activities in these buildings, but lectures also take place throughout the UCD Belfield campus, so students experience a variety of locations, lecture theatres, seminar rooms and laboratories.
Subject Choices
Engineering Study Abroad students may select modules from the following Engineering programme majors:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Biosystems Engineering
- Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
- Energy Systems Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
Students are also permitted to take up to two elective modules from other Programme areas such as Arts, Human Sciences or Science.
Module Details
Details of the modules in the Engineering Programmes may be obtained from:
www.ucd.ie/students/course_search.htm
You may select modules from more than one degree programme provided there are no timetable conflicts. Students attending UCD for the full academic session may take up to 60 ECTS credits (normally 12 x 5-credit modules) while students attending for one semester may take up to 30 ECTS credits (normally 6 x 5-credit modules).
Assessment
Assessment is based on a combination of in-semester components such as mid-semester tests, laboratory practical reports, projects and homework assignments, and formal examinations which take place the end of each semester, i.e. in December and May. Study Abroad students are expected to undertake all assessments in accordance with University regulations.
Peer Mentors
All incoming Engineering Study Abroad students will be linked with a peer mentor who is a second or third year UCD student. Where possible, we try to assign peer mentors who have had a similar experience and have spent some time studying in the US and will be able to understand the needs and aspirations of Engineering Study Abroad students.
Credit Transfer
At the end of the semester, UCD will send an official transcript of results to the home institution. Your home institution decides on credits to be awarded for modules pursued at UCD. We will be pleased to provide full information on our modules to enable institutions to make decisions regarding the transfer of credits.
Eligibility
The minimum GPA requirement is 3.00.
In addition to completing the UCD on-line application process, a standard form of identification i.e. copy of Passport, a transcript of academic record to date and letter of recommendation from an academic referee should be sent to the Engineering Programme Office before the application deadline.
Applications
Application are made online. Click here to apply.
