The Study Abroad Programme at UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems aims to provide an exciting opportunity to advance your knowledge of nursing and midwifery while studying at one of Ireland’s leading universities.
The aim of our school is to provide our students with the very best opportunities and supports to pursue studies in nursing and midwifery and to promote safe, person-centered efficient practice.
As the oldest university school of nursing and midwifery in Ireland we have played a leading role in the development of nursing and midwifery education, practice and research nationally. We offer four undergraduate programmes which provide entry to professional practice in general nursing, psychiatric nursing, children’s and general nursing and midwifery.
Studying at our school offers you the opportunity to meet other students from many cultures and countries.
Facilities
Our programmes are delivered in a state-of-the art learning environment. The Health Sciences Centre consists of top-of-the range lecture facilities, a purpose built clinical skills centre with interactive video equipment, library, computing resources and student resource rooms.
Students undertake clinical practice at national centres of excellence and our partner hospitals include: St. Vincent’s University Hospital, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, St. John of God Hospital, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, the National Maternity Hospital and Our Lady’s Hospice.
Subject Choices
Study Abroad students may select modules from a comprehensive range of undergraduate modules on offer in the school in the areas of nursing and midwifery, children’s nursing, and mental health. You may also select up to 2 modules from other university programmes.

Study abroad students may enrol in a maximum of 30 ECTS per semester. You may select 4 modules from the nursing programme and up to 2 modules from another programme. Please note that choice is subject to timetable constraints and available spaces.
Assessment
Assessment is based on a combination of in-semester components such as, projects, term papers, clinical assessments and formal examinations. Study abroad students are expected to undertake all assessments in accordance with University regulations.
Credits
At the end of the semester, UCD will send an official transcript to the home institution. Your home institution will decide the credits to be awarded for modules pursued in UCD.
Eligibility
The minimum GPA is 3.00.
In addition to completing the UCD on-line application process, a standard form of identification i.e. copy of Passport, a transcript of academic record to date and letter of recommendation from an academic referee should be sent to the UCD Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems Programme Office before the application deadline.
