UCD-China Masters Pathways
 

UCD has agreements in place with a number of universities throughout China. These partner institutions have strengths in a number of areas, including Engineering, Life Sciences, Business and Law. These agreements offerstudents to undertake Masters Programmes at UCD after graduating from their home institution.

Partner Universities

UCD currently has collaborative programmes with the following partner universities in China:

 

Masters Pathways

To offer students from non-English speaking countries the opportunity to make a smooth transition to studying abroad, UCD has created a set of Masters pathways. Pathway 1 and 2 enable international students to benefit from a preparatory course that enhances their English language skills, allows them to adjust to a different learning culture and helps them to get used to a new way of life. Experience has shown that for one year Masters Programmes, this preparation is crucial if international students are to achieve their full academic potential during graduate studies.

Pathway One  -September Start
3+1+1     4+1+1
Students study for three years at their home University, undertake two semesters of preparatory study at UCD and then progress to a Masters programme at UCD. They obtain a Bachelors Degree from their home university and a Masters Degree from UCD. Students who have already graduated are also eligible to join this programme.

Pathway Two  -January Start

3.5+0.5+1     4+0.5+1

Students study for three and a half years at their home University, undertake one semester of preparatory study at UCD and then progress to a Masters programme at UCD. They obtain a Bachelors Degree from their home university and a Masters degree from UCD. Students who have already graduated are also eligible to join this programme.

Pathway Three  -September Start
4+1
This option is available to exceptional candidates who are able to show that they already have the required language, cultural and academic knowledge to proceed directly to a Masters programme at UCd upon graduation. Students undertake a Masters programme at UCD. They obtain a Masters Degree from UCD.

 

Entry Criteria

English Language
Students are required to show evidence of their English language ability. One of the following is required: 

  • A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent) for 3+1+1/4+1+1 and 6.0 (or equivalent) for 3.5+0.5+1/4+0.5+1
  • Other similar exams recognised by UCD

Applicants who have not taken language tests such as IELTS or TOEFL will be required to take a UCD language test. Applicants for programmes in Business are required to achieve an IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6 in each section, before being admitted to the Masters programme. Applicants for Law and Human Science subjects should be aware that these subject areas demand a higher level of competence in the English language. Candidates who wish to enter the 4+1 programme will be required to demonstrate a higher level of language ability. Individual Masters Programmes may set their own entry requirements

Academic Performance
Students are required to have an average mark of 75% or higher. Entry into the Masters programme is conditional on this mark remaining at 75% or higher upon graduation. Applicants for programmes in the Graduate School of Business must have an average mark of 80% or higher. Applicants who do not met these requirements may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Interview
All students will normally be interviewed at their home University. This interview will be conducted by UCD staff and will assess language and academic skills, as well as the applicant’s suitability for study at UCD. Applicants who are already in ireland may also be asked at attend an interview.

Supporting Documents
The following documents are required to be submitted as part of any application:

  • Certified English translations of University transcripts
  • Copies of English langauge certification
  • Personal statement, which should give details on the candidates background and interest in UCD
  • Application form

Candidates who wish to apply for the 4+1 direct entry programme will also need to supply two academic letters of reference.

 

Fees

Fees for the preparatory element of each pathway are as follows:

  • 3+1+1/4+1+1: Fees for the first year are currently set at €9,000
  • 3.5+0.5+1/4+0.5+1: Fees for the first half-year are currently set at €6,000

    For students from the partner institutions listed above, a 10% discount applies to Masters programme fees.

     

    How to Apply

    Please complete the Masters pathways Application Form and return, with supporting documents, to michael.garvey@ucd.ie. The deadline for applications for semester two of the 2011/12 academic year is November 11, 2011. The deadline for semester one of the 2012/13 academic year is April 28, 2012.
