UCD International Foundation Programmes

English Language Requirements for UCD programmes

Teaching in Irish Universities is normally through the medium of English, therefore all applicants are required to demonstrate a high level of competence in English language. Applicants whose first language is not English, and who are not presenting the subject English in a school-leaving examination which is at least of pass Leaving Certificate standard (e.g. GCSE grade C) must present English at a sufficient level as outlined here

If you wish to come to UCD to study an English language course the UCD Applied Language Centre provides a wide range of English language courses throughout the year. These include:

-Short term and long term General English.
-Cambridge and IELTS Examination Preparation.
-English for Academic Purposes.
-English for Special Purposes (university collaborations, catering for groups, etc).

Requirements for undergraduate study at UCD

To access an undergraduate degree at UCD you will need a high school qualification and an average IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent level of English.

If you want to study at UCD but do not meet direct entry requirements for the degree you want, you can apply for a place on the International Foundation Year.

The International Foundation Year is specifically designed for international students who need additional study before starting an undergraduate degree programme at UCD. The programme you study will consist of three terms.

Each programme combines study skills, English language training and academic study to prepare you for degree level study.  We take special care to provide international students with the set of academic study skills that are required of Irish students but may not be taught in other countries, so that the transition to a different education system is as easy as possible for the student.

Depending on the degree you want to access, you can choose from two routes:

Business, Economics and Social Studies
Science, Engineering and Biomedical

Requirements for postgraduate study at UCD

To offer students from non-English speaking countries the opportunity to make a smooth transition to studying abroad, UCD has created a set of Masters pathways. Pathway 1 and 2 enable international students to benefit from a preparatory course that enhances their English language skills, allows them to adjust to a different learning culture and helps them to get used to a new way of life.

Experience has shown that for one year Masters Programmes, this preparation is crucial if international students are to achieve their full academic potential during graduate studies.
