American Students at UCD

There are currently 685 American students at UCD.   230 are single semester study abroad. 19% of the student body at UCD are international students.  They are widely spread across all Colleges and Schools with a heavy concentration in Arts, Celtic Studies & Human Sciences and Business.

Liberal Arts & Sciences Program

The UCD Liberal Arts & Science Program is a four year degree that mirrors the American educational system. Click here for the program outline. You are offered the time and space to explore different areas of study and interest, while you build your stage one degree requirements, before settling on your degree of choice in year two or three.  

Arts (BA), Social Science (BSocSc) and Business (BComm) degrees can be declared at the end of your second year at UCD.  If your choice is a Science (BSc) degree, this must be declared at the end of first year.

The University College Dublin Global Excellence Undergraduate Scholarships

The University College Dublin Global Excellence Undergraduate Scholarships is established to continue to attract the best and brightest of undergraduate students from the United States. The financial awards range from 30% – 50% annual tuition (approximately $5,700 - $9,650 USD annually). Undergraduate Program Application

Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement is SAT score 1500 and high school GPA 3.00

However, UCD Programs categorised as Highly Competitive would generally require a standard in excess of the min entry requirements listed.

Note: UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science (including Radiography BSc, and Biomedical, Health and Life Sciences BSc) and UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science (Physiotherapy BSc) only consider applications submitted via authorised educational agents. For more information please contact our North American agent, The Atlantic Bridge Program (www.atlanticbridge.com)

The following supporting documentation should be scanned to the online application account or forwarded to Admissions:

  • High School transcript including final year results
  • For those completing current year exams: mid-year report/transcript including current GPA
  • College Board SAT and/or AP scores (College Board ID: 6675)
  • ACT scores (ACT Code: 5512)
  • Reference Letters (one from college counsellor and one from a teacher)
  • Personal Statement

The online application facility (www.ucd.ie/apply) opens 01 November, prior to entry. The online application fee is €45. Applications are accepted and assessed on a rolling basis until 01 July. However, we recommend students to apply as early as possible as popular programs tend to fill quickly.  There are rolling admissions at UCD with a 2-3 week turnaround time.

Copies of transcripts will suffice for assessment purposes however original transcripts must be provided and verified prior to registration.

Please note that students awaiting results of the High School examinations may apply and could be made a `conditional offer'.

Language Requirements

American students are not required to meet the Other Language or the Irish Language requirement, except where a specific language requirement is indicated as is the case with the following programs:

BCL/Maîtrise: French HB3

Law with French Law: French HB3

Commerce International: French language combination min HC3 in French required.

However, American students must achieve a C grade in high school English.

Graduate Program Application

Holders of Bachelors, and Masters degrees with good grades from competitive and well ranked universities and colleges in North America may be considered for entry to graduate degrees at UCD.

Please note that applications are accepted from October of the previous year of study and candidates will be notified of the status of their application within 4 weeks of application.

Graduate Programs (Master's / PhD)

It is recommended that applicants interested in research at Masters and PhD level in the first instance, should read the information available at www.ucd.ie/research.

Secondly, applicants should review the website of the relevant School and College to ensure they are fully informed about the research objectives of the academic concerned.  Prior to submitting an application it is essential that candidates make contact with potential supervisors.

Holders of Bachelors and Masters degrees with exceptional grades from competitive Universities and Colleges in USA will be considered for entry to Masters and PhD research at UCD.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

US Financial Aid (FAFSA Code: 010188)

American citizens and permanent residents attending UCD are eligible to receive Federal Student Aid from the US Department of Education. UCD participates in the Direct Loan and PLUS loan programs, and most students are able to finance their entire education costs (including tuition, fees, room and board, transportation and books) through a combination of these programs.
