In September 1979, the Department of Irish Folklore, University College Dublin, initiated a project to collect folklore in urban areas of Ireland whose traditions, customs and social history had not been recorded as intensively as rural areas of Ireland. Funded by the Department of Education, the Urban Folklore Project was intended to address this rural-urban imbalance, using the most up-to-date audio and video recording equipment. The team of some sixteen collectors made more than 1,000 hours of audio and video recordings over a sixteen month period, chiefly in the Dublin metropolitan region. A comprehensive photographic record of Dublin’s social and cultural life, trade and commerce was also made, amounting to several thousand images which are now housed in the National Folklore Collection.
