Folklore Video

While a number of valuable 8mm films b/w films were made by the Irish Folklore Commission in the late 1940s and 1950s, it was not until the late 1970s, and the advent of video, that filming of storytellers and traditional events and processes was undertaken to any significant extent. This new departure coincided with the Urban Folklore Project which was conducted by the Department of Irish Folklore, UCD (successors to the Irish Folklore Commission) in the Dublin area. In the 1980s and ‘90s, the Audio Visual Centre, UCD, was routinely employed to video a number of elderly storytellers, many of them Irish-language speakers who could recite longer folktales and legends. Since that time, digital video recordings have become a feature of collecting work by NFC staff and students.
