Recommendations for managing the file sizes of course material in Blackboard
If you are using Blackboard to deliver course materials to your students, please note the following guidelines for including images in, and tips for limiting the size of your presentations:
Physical Size
Keep image sizes small. Use an imaging application to reduce the size. Do not rely on the resizing tool as this only changes the view.
Resolution
If you want to display an image on screen, it is not necessary to use high-resolution images. It is still possible to maintain the quality of the image and reduce the amount of space (memory) it takes up. All images should be reduced to an appropriate resolution such as 72dpi (dots per inch).
Image type
Once you are happy with the image you have chosen, save the copy you wish to use for your presentation, as a .jpg or .gif file. This will compress the size of the image. Bitmap images (i.e screen shots) increase file sizes and should be avoided.
Video clips and Animation
The use of video clips or animation automatically increases the size of your file and unlike images, there is no way to compress them. Please limit the use of video clips and animation in your presentations where you intend them to be printed.
