If you are corresponding regularly with a large group of people, it may be a good idea to create a LISTSERV list. Any LISTSERV discussion list must, however, be of relevance to the Irish Higher Education and Research Community. The LISTSERV list service is hosted by HEANET. Details are available at: LISTSERV
How can I apply for a LISTSERV list?
For details on how to complete the application form click LISTSERV Registration Form. The LISTSERV Registration Form is available at: http://listserv.heanet.ie/registration
Once the list is setup, the list owners will receive details on how to manage the list.
How do I subscribe to LISTSERV list?
To subscribe to a LISTSERV list send an e-mail message to listserv. This message should have no subject line and have no signature file attached. In the body of the message type: SUBSCRIBE listname firstname lastname. The listname must be the exact name of the list. For example: SUBSCRIBE test-xx Joe Bloggs.
How do I unsubscribe from a LISTSERV list?
To unsubscribe from a LISTSERV lists you need to send an e-mail message to listserv. This message should have no subject line and have no signature file attached. In the body of the message type: UNSUBSCRIBE listname. Again, the listname must be the exact name of the list. For example: UNSUBSCRIBE test-xx
What happens if I change my email address?
Please remember that a change of e-mail address will affect your registration on LISTSERV lists. If you are changing your e-mail address, you should unsubscribe from any LISTSERV list first and subscribe again afterwards using your new e-mail address.
What should I do when going on holidays/sabattical?
If you intend being away for a period of time (on holiday or sabbatical), it's a good idea to unsubscribe temporarily from LISTSERV lists. To do this, send an e-mail to listserv - this message should have no subject line and no signature file attached. In the body of the message type: SET listname NOMAIL e.g. set test-xx nomail.
How can I restore my subscription to a LISTSERV list?
If you have temporarily suspended receipt of e-mail from a LISTSERV list, you can restore subscription by sending an e-mail to listserv. Again the message should have no subject line and no signature file attached. In the body of the message type: SET listname MAIL e.g. set test-xx mail.
If you are a list owner:
If you are a list owner you can manage your LISTSERV list using the Web interface by setting up a personal LISTSERV password. This can be done at the listserv website.
After setting your password, click on Back to the LISTSERV home page at the LISTSERV.HEANET.IE. link and choose the Mailing list management interface (list owners only) option. Once you have logged in using your new LISTSERV password you will be able to access a number of management functions:
- Subscribers - allows you to add and remove subscribers to a list as required
- Configuration - allows a list owner to change any parameter in the list header
- Layout - provides flexibility in terms of how the list management pages are presented
- Templates - gives control over the content of certain messages, including the welcome and farewell messages
- Bulk op - allows you to carry out bulk operations, such as adding or removing a number of subscribers at the same time
- Command - allows you to issue commands to LISTSERV, such as PUT or GET
- Mail merge - a useful way of communicating with list members collectively
