Installing & Using PasswordSafe

For password management within UCD, we recommend the use of ‘Password Safe’ password manager. PasswordSafe is an open source tool that allows you to securely store and use passwords for applications or websites. It has a number of convenient features, including password cut and paste, secure password generation, and a single portable key file that can be copied and backed up.

The tool has a long design history, and is one of the most widely used tools of its type.

(1) How To Install PasswordSafe:

Step 1

Click here to download the software.

Step 2

When the File Download window appears select Run. Should Internet Explorer provide an internet security box select Run again.

Step 3

When happy with the license agreement click I Agree. Check the destination folder is correct and select Install.

Step 4

Once installed click Close.

(2) How To Use PasswordSafe:

Step 1

Click on the Password Safe icon on your desktop to start.

Step 2

Click on Create new database,you will be asked to choose and verify a combination or password for the Safe.

Step 3

Click on the highlighted icon in the Password Safe menu to add an entry.

Step 4

Enter your Username and Password details in the appropriate fields and click OK.

Step 5

Double-click on your chosen account details to copy your password to the clipboard.

Step 6

Double-click on the highlighted icon in the menu to copy your Username to the clipboard if necessary.

Step 7

You will be then asked to give a filename and location to save the current database.

Step 8

Place a copy of the 'PasswordSafe' database on your network share so you have a back up !

Note: This back up "Safe combination" does not change, so it can be a good plan to write the safe combination down and store it in a sealed envelope somewhere safe.
