How to check if your laptop has a wireless card

Last Updated: 07/10/08

These instructions apply to laptops with the Microsoft Windows XP operating system only.

Step 1

Click Start > Control Panel.

Step 2

Double click the icon labelled System.

Step 3

Click the tab Hardware.

Step 4

Click the button Device Manager.

Step 5

Search the list for an item labelled Networks adapters.

Click to open it.

You should see a list of network card on your PC. One of these should be labelled ‘wireless’ (though naming can vary). See the example below.

Intel Pro/Wireless 3945abg

Step 6

If there is no wireless card installed, you can buy one at any computer accessories store.

Be sure to install both the wireless hardware and software.

When done, return to the instruction on how to access the web from the UCD Wireless Network.
