MS/ET: Certificate in Educational Technology Introduction (Certificate Participants only)

This course introduces participants to the concepts, skills and technologies used in educational technology and to the certificate in educational technology programme. It is a core component of the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

MS/ILR: Images as Learning Resources

This course introduces participants to best practice in the use, creation, delivery and management of digital images in education.

Objectives: During this course participants are introduced to:

  • Best pedagogical practice in the use of digital images
  • Creating and sourcing images
  • Delivering images in class and online
  • Organising image collections
  • Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights

This course is a core component of the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

Requirements: Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop (with wireless connectivity)

Dates: 10th October 2012. 10:00 - 13:00 or 15th October 2012. 14:00 - 17:00.

MS/W2: Web 2.0 - Introductory Workshop

Web 2.0 is used to describe new technologies where content is created by the users. In this workshop participants explore technologies such as blogging, podcasting, RSS, wikis, social bookmarking and social networking. Participants investigate specific services such as Delicious, Facebook, iTunes, Twitter and youTube and their application to higher education.

Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Be familiar with a range of web 2.0 technologies
  • Be aware of the potential of web 2.0 technologies in higher education

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

MS/PIC: Picasa for Image Editing - Workshop

This workshop provides an overview of image manipulation using Picasa. This is an 'easy-to-use' tool which enables participants to integrate digital photographs and images into their publications and teaching materials. We recommend that participants take this course prior to taking Introduction to Photoshop.

Prerequisites: Basic computer skills

Objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Able to crop and resize images
  • Add text captions to images
  • Make simple colour and lighting fixes
  • Capture screen displays

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

MS/POD: Podcasting in Higher Education - Workshop

Participants make an audio recording, edit it and publish it as a podcast.

Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will

  • Be able to record their voice
  • Be familiar with basic audio editing techniques
  • Be able to perform simple audio edits
  • Be able to create an audio podcast

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

MS/PSR: Poster Production using PowerPoint - Workshop

This workshop aims to give participants an overview of the design issues involved in producing high quality posters. The emphasis is on practical, hands-on production using MS PowerPoint.

Prerequisites: The workshop is aimed at those with a basic knowledge of PowerPoint who want to design their own posters.

Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants should

  • Be familiar with the cornerstones of good design
  • Be able to make more effective use of layout, text, colour and images in order to produce an effective poster presentation

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

Requirements: Participants are required to bring sample text and images (in digital format) that they would like to use in a poster.

MS/PPTA: Audio with PowerPoint - Workshop

In this workshop participants learn how to add a voiceover and music to a PowerPoint presentation.

Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Use a microphone with a computer
  • Record their own voice over a presentation
  • Add music to a presentation
  • Control audio play in PowerPoint
  • Distribute a completed PPT presentation

MS/WRI: Writing for the Web - Workshop

In this workshop participants learn how and why readers find websites, how they establish their credibility and how they find information on the site. This knowledge determines how best to write and prepare content for a website. Writing for the web is compared with writing for print and other media.

Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Be able to write for search engines
  • Be able to write for eye scanning
  • Understand the role of metadata
  • Understand how a website may be evaluated by users

MS/DIS: Blackboard Communication Tools for Developing Learning - Workshop

This workshop (formerly called Maximising the Value of Online Learning) explores the use of the Blackboard discussion boards for teaching and learning. Lecturers learn how to create effective and engaging online learning activities by actively using the discussion boards and virtual classroom.

Prerequisites: This course is only suitable for those interested in using Blackboard discussion boards in their teaching.

Objectives: On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Participate in a Blackboard discussion forum  
  • Create and contribute to online learning activities
  • Be familiar with Salmon’s 5 Stages model
  • Enhance their teaching & learning practice using a discussion forum
  • Appreciate the role of an e-moderator and how to moderate a discussion forum

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

Date: 9th November - 12th December 2012 (One hour per day over 6 weeks - either online or in classroom). 11:00 - 12:00

Duration: The course is a blend of three one-hour seminars and three online practical activities. It takes place over six consecutive weeks.

MS/IPS: Photoshop for Image Editing - Introductory Workshop

This workshop provides an overview of image manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. It enables participants to integrate digital photographs and images into their teaching materials.

Prerequisites: Complete Picasa workshop above or equivalent skills

Objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will be:

  • Able to add text and shapes to images
  • Able to crop and resize images
  • Familiar with the Photoshop drawing tools
  • Familiar with the use of layers in Photoshop

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

Date: 28th November, 5th & 12th December 2012. All 10:00 - 13:00.

Duration: Three half days (Participants should attend all three half days)

MS/APS: Photoshop for Image Editing - Advanced Workshop

This workshop enables participants to enhance their photo-editing skills using Photoshop.

Prerequisites: This workshop is aimed at those who have completed the Introductory Workshop in Image Editing using Photoshop or who already have an equivalent knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.

Objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Use and apply various Adjustment Layers
  • Understand masking techniques and filters
  • Use Channels to create masks

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

Date: Semester 2. To be announced.

Duration: Two half days. (Participants should attend both half days)

This workshop introduces participants to digital photography - the equipment used and skills required.

Objectives: On completion of this workshop participants will:

  • Have a better understanding of the principles of good photography
  • Compose good quality photographs
  • Be more confident in their photographic practice

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

Requirements: Participants are required to bring a digital camera and instructions.

MS/AUT: Articulate for Authoring Learning Materials - Workshop

This workshop gives participants an overview of the issues involved in producing high quality, media-rich interactive learning materials and an opportunity to develop their own content using  Articulate - a PowerPoint based authoring tool.

Objectives: On completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify the features of effective online learning
  • Create interactive elearning materials using Articulate
  • Publish learning materials to Blackboard

Participation in this workshop can be credited towards the UCD Media Services Certificate in Educational Technology.

MS/BLG: Blogging in Higher Education - Workshop

This workshop reviews the use of blogs as teaching and learning tools. The focus is on the creation, editing and publication of a blog using WordPress. Blogger and Blackboard blogs are also reviewed. RSS feeds are introduced.

Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will

  • Be able to create a blog
  • Be able to write posts and comments in a blog
  • Be able to add images and movies to the blog posts
  • Be able to edit and administer a blog
  • Understand how blogs can enhance teaching & learning

This workshop explores the use of wikis for collaborative teaching and learning in higher education. Wikis both in Blackboard and on the web will be investigated.

  • Be familiar with techniques for fostering collaboration
  • Be familiar with the editorial process for Wikipedia
  • Understand how wikis can enhance teaching & learning
