Latest Developments
Media Services is the new title of the Audio Visual Centre. We are now part of UCD IT Services, along with UCD Computing Services, UCD Management Services (MSU) and the UCD Web Unit. This should lead to synergies in the delivery of educational technology and media services to UCD academics.
UCDscholarcast: Podcasting Research in Irish Studies

Media Services have developed the UCDscholarcast website and podcasts in conjunction with the UCD School of English, Drama and Film. The series editor is Dr PJ Mathews.
The UCDscholarcast series is inspired by the RTE Radio Thomas Davis lectures and aims to be the audio equivalent of a well-produced academic journal and a multimedia equivalent of the Thomas Davis Lectures. The inaugural UCDscholarcast series is entitled ‘The Art of Popular Culture: From "The Meeting of the Waters" to Riverdance’. Since then, scholarcast series on 'Archaeologies of Art' and 'Scholars off the Page' have been produced and 'Reconceiving the British Isles: The Literature of the Archipelago' is under production.
Each lecture is given to a live audience and then recorded in the Media Services studio as a ‘scholarcast'. The scholarcasts are then published on individual web pages, which contain a speaker profile, abstract and transcript of the lecture in addition to the audio recording. The recordings are then made available as podcasts. Listeners can subscribe to the podcast series using iTunes or any RSS aggregator. Such aggregators check for new podcasts and download them automatically to the listener’s computer, where they can be played or transferred to an iPod or MP3 player. A transcript of each lecture can also be downloaded and used for citation.
Online learning in Psychiatry
Following the award of a Module Innovation Support Grant of €3,500, Media Services and Dr Allys Guerandel, UCD School of Medicine and Medical Science (St Vincent's University Hospital - Psychiatry) have developed further blended learning materials for final year undergraduate psychiatry teaching. This was of one of 11 grants awarded out of a total of 33 submissions for 2009/2010.
The latest learning materials cover topics such as Reflection, Affective Disorders, Substance Use & Misuse, Delirium and Psychopharmacology. They follow earlier video case studies and an online tutorial on Taking Case Histories in Psychiatry. The online learning materials makes extensive of video clips of doctor-patient interactions. Students can check their own knowledge as they progress through the material by answering questions and receiving feedback on their responses. The Reflection materials are integrated with online activities in the Blackboard discussion forum.
UCD Institute of Food and Health e-Learning
Media Services recently completed a series of media-rich elearning lectures for Professor Mike Gibney, UCD Institute of Food and Health. The UCD Institute of Food and Health is a major campus-wide initiative at University College Dublin aimed at developing and conducting world class, multidisciplinary research into food and health.
These elearning lectures are designed to disseminate research findings both to researchers and the general public in a way that is clear, concise and timely, so as to raise awareness of critical issues in relation to food and health and contribute to the improvement of the general health and well being of the population.
The lectures were recorded in Media Services purpose built television studio. Camera-ready PowerPoint slides were developed in advance of the recording. A customised multimedia template was designed and developed and captured audio and video were compressed and imported into this template. The completed digital media content was then uploaded into the Institutes website. http://www.ucd.ie/foodandhealth/videolectures/

UCD Maps
UCD IT Services is delighted to announce the launch of the UCD Interactive Map, which is designed to help students orientate themselves around the largest university in Ireland.

Built using the latest in WEB 2.0 technology and employing Google Maps technology as a basis, this map is both accurate and state of the art. It is interactive, innovative and most importantly - easy to use.
The UCD Interactive Map was developed as a result of collaboration between the Orientation Mapping Centre, School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy and UCD IT Services, Media Services.
Two young Geography students, Paul Alexander and Robert Mathews, had a vision of a user-friendly interactive map that would help first year students, international students and occasional visitors, easily find their way around the biggest university in Ireland.
Features of the map include full and accurate building outlines, as well as the current outline of UCD Belfield Campus. Each outline is a doorway to information containing useful hints, tips, floor plans (for room navigation), pictures, virtual tours, access points and much, much more.
Students simply have to click on the name of the building they wish to find and they are shown the way. A range of photographs of important buildings have been built-in to help students and visitors recognise the actual place they are trying to find.
The students thanked John Matthews, Multimedia specialist, and Helen Guerin, Head of Media Services, for all their support and technical assistance throughout the project. Which they hope will continue to be built upon by future generations of Geography students.
