Update on Technical Issues with Online Registration

The following update refers to the two technical performance issues that arose with Registration 2011.

Continuing Students Registration – Wednesday, 17 August 2011
A performance problem was noted from 07.30 with large numbers of students unable to access the system.  Corrective action was taken at approximately 08:30 which marginally improved the situation until the problem was resolved at 13:00.

Elective Registration – Monday, 29 August 2011
On opening at 07:30, the process performed poorly with many not being able to access the system. It is estimated that there were 1,040 students waiting. The decision was taken by UCD Registry and IT Services at 09:00 to close registration.

Mitigation of Risks
To reduce risk of further performance issues for the remainder of this registration season, the following actions have been agreed with UCD Registry:

(1) Re-opening Elective registration in batches which commenced Wednesday, 31 August (based upon the logs of who logged into SISWeb on Monday, 29 August).

(2) Reducing the impact of First Year registration – by separating the Arts/Commerce/Law/Social Science cohorts from all other programmes.

(3) Opening registration earlier in the morning to avoid the initial spike in demand which occurs when competitive processes are opened.

(4) Putting in place specific actions to reduce the risk of performance problems on the first day of term.

Once Registration is over, IT Services in conjunction with Registry will undertake a formal review.

We would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation at this time and apologise for any inconvenience caused to you or UCD students.
