ICHEC at UCD

Collaborating with ICHEC in the provision of this facility to users within UCD and the broader research community in Ireland increases our ability as a University and a country to both retain our best researchers and attract further research interests. To this end the ICHEC Stokes HPC Cluster is now hosted in the Research IT Data Centre. The cluster which runs on the Silicon Graphics ICE 8200 EX platform was installed and configured by SGI in collaboration with ICHEC in November 2008.

Stokes using the Intel ‘Harpertown” E5462 quad core processor has been ranked at number 117 in the Top 500 Super Computers in the world.

Running SuSE Linux Enterprise Server as its OS and the MOAB Cluster Suite, the cluster provides applications and cluster tools to users including the Intel Cluster Toolkit. Dedicated high performance storage of approximately 65TB is also provided as part of this facility. The cluster and storage is interconnected using a mixture of Infiniband and Gigabit Ethernet.

Whilst the cluster is located within the UCD Campus physically, there is a dedicated 1GB High Speed Link directly to the ICHEC Cluster from HEAnet. This ensures that access to the cluster be identical for all users and ICHEC themselves control the security of both their cluster network and the cluster. General support for UCD - ICHEC Cluster users will be available also through ICHEC, with  Research IT Services hosting ICHEC support staff on site on a scheduled basis to assist customers.
