Research IT

Networking & Security

UCD IT Services is responsible for the provision of network services to all users in the University including both wired network points and wireless access. UCD is also the first Irish University to connect to HEAnet at a speed of 10Gb, giving users within the University increased bandwidth to the internet and external collaborators.

Access and Support

Connecting Research Equipment

To connect equipment to the UCD network you need to consider the use of the equipment. If you are connecting a standard piece of equipment e.g. desktop, laptop or server to the network then you should see "Register a New Computer on the UCD Network"

If you want to register a server on the UCD network click here

If you wish to connect a piece of equipment such as a scanner, sequencer, microscope etc or a PC controlling laboratory equipment. You need to consider the type of access you require to or from the equipment, who you need to access the equipment and the security of the equipment. In most cases it is possible for UCD IT Services, working closely with you to create a network configuration to ensure the access and security you require. If you have a piece of research equipment you wish to connect to the UCD network, or network in any way, please contact researchit@ucd.ie

Note:

  • Any devices connected to the network must comply with the requirements of UCD IT Services. Check with UCD IT Services before you do anything that might affect the network.
  • If you are unsure as to whether you can connect your equipment to the UCD network, you can e-mail helpdesk@ucd.ie or researchit@ucd.ie to check your equipment and / or your options.
  • All equipment and its use must comply with the Acceptable Use Policy and the EICT Policy

What next?

Once you have registered your equipment for connection to the UCD network you should configure the equipment to automatically obtain its IP Address using DHCP.

If you have registered equipment to provide services you need to ensure that the operating system is patched and that the services are configured to use the correct interfaces and that they do not interfere with the UCD network.

In situations where you require to connect more than one ethernet card in a server, such as when a you need to connect to both a private and a public network, where your server is a cluster head node or connect to an iSCSI LUN etc the Research IT Support Team will assist you with the configuration of both the interface and services offered on each interface.

Bastion Host Pilot Service

The Research IT Services Bastion Host Service is a service that is offered specifically to researchers who are registered users of the UCD portion of the ICHEC cluster. This service allows users access the Stokes ICHEC Cluster when they are off site or at a non-participating institution. This service also allows researchers to access other UCD registered servers via SSH.

This service is in pilot and as such cannot be guaranteed to be highly available.

SSH Tunnels

SSH tunnels via the bastion host are allowed. However users should be aware that the bastion host is not designed to provide a persistent tunneling service. As such connections made through a tunnel may be lost at any time.

Users should be aware that they are responsible for all traffic via a tunnel instigated by their user ID regardless of the source or person using it.

Notes:

  1. Access will not under any circumstances be granted to alternative services or locations.
  2. Access is only available to registered UCD users who are also users of the UCD ICHEC Service or other services offered by Research IT.
  3. Access is not by default, it must be requested via email to researchit@ucd.ie
  4. Use of the service is covered by the Acceptable Use and EICT Policies.
  5. This is a complimentary service and should be treated as such. It is not a highly available or high performance service.

SVN Pilot Service

Research IT Services offer researchers an SVN (subversion) service which can be used for collaboration as well as for personal or group code versioning control. It can also be used for document version control.

This service is in pilot and as such cannot be guaranteed to be highly available.
