Poll Everywhere
Poll Everywhere
Poll Everywhere is a simple text message voting system that works well for live classes. Students can vote sending an SMS text message, by using their computer’s or smartphone’s web browser, or by sending a “tweet” on the Twitter service. The poll is embedded within the instructor’s presentation or web page and will update in real time as students respond to the poll. Advanced uses include texting comments or questions to an instructor.
It can be used to make lectures and tutorials more interactive, by allowing instructors to administer quizzes, receive feedback or test student knowledge without the need for paperwork.
A major advantage of Poll Everywhere is there is no need for a separate clicker/voting device and hence no logistics in distributing & collecting these. However, one disadvantage of Poll Everywhere over clickers is the student has to pay for the text if they do not have a plan with free texts. Alternatively, they could vote for free using the web or twitter from their laptop or smartphone.
Access and Support
IT Services have taken out a pilot subscription Poll Everywhere for a limited number of instructors.
It is ideally suitable for use in a class where a significant number of students have laptops, so if a student doesn't want to use their phone they can use their laptop.
